Suburban and Chennai areas suffer with water shortage

CHENNAI : The Suburban and Chennai areas have been recently facing severe water shortage.Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy has said that the Government would bring ten million litres of water every day from Jolarpet in Vellore to Chennai through rail wagons to meet the shortage.

Speaking to media persons yesterday, he said that this step would be in addition to two million litres of water from Kerala.

As the water bodies supplying water to the city have gone dry and parched, the Government took to drawing water from granite quarries and agricultural areas from the neighbouring Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram for water supply to Chennai.

It had been more than 200 days that the city had got rains up to a notable level, though parts of the city experienced a light spell recently.Apartments, high rise buildings, educational institutions, IT offices have resorted to water supply from government as well as private agencies for drinking water.

The Government will hold talks with the private water suppliers to fix a uniform rate as consumers have to spend Rs. 10 to 20 for getting a pot of water.
Though the Government has asked to get water supply by registering online, people have to wait for their turn.
