Tree plantation drive oranised to mark  World Environment Day

The Faculty of Legal Sciences at Shoolini University marked World Environment Day with a tree plantation drive, promoting university’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability. The event was organised by the Legal Aid Club under the aegis of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Solan.

This year’s global theme was “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution,” highlighted the urgent need to address the harmful impact of plastics on the environment, human health, and climate change. The university community marked the occasion by pledging to protect the environment and reduce plastic usage, while planting over 100 saplings of various trees in and around the campus.

Chancellor Prof. P.K. Khosla, the chief guest, participated in the plantation drive and shared his experiences from the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm University Sweden. He said that to promote sustainable practices, Shoolini University has installed 400 handmade Himachali kiltas (traditional baskets) to be used as eco-friendly dustbins across the campus.

Prof. J.M. Julka, Director of Planning, Shoolini University, and a noted Zoologist, planted a Golden Rain Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata. He encouraged everyone to minimize the use of plastic consumption to protect biodiversity.

Brig. Sunil Dutt Mehta, Director of Operations, Shoolini University, planted a Deodar tree (Cedrus deodara) and spoke about the importance of community-driven efforts for a greener and cleaner future. He highlighted that university has already planted over 10,000 trees in and around Solan till now.

Prof. Nandan Sharma, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Legal Sciences, said the university remains committed to environmental causes through continuous initiatives. He added that the plantation drive reflects Shoolini’s proactive approach towards cleanliness and ecological conservation, aligned with the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle principles.
