New Delhi, August 31
CJI NV Ramana administered the oath of office to nine newly appointed Supreme Court judges on Tuesday. This is the first time that such a big oath ceremony took place. The nine new judges include three women judges. The swearing-in ceremony was held in the auditorium of the Additional Building Complex of the Supreme Court.
This is the first time in the history of the Supreme Court that nine judges were administered oath together. Usually the oath to the new judges is administered in the court room of the Chief Justice.

After the oath of nine judges on Tuesday, the number of judges in the apex court, including CJI Raman, will increase to 33, while the sanctioned strength is 34.
The nine new judges who took the oath of office as judges of the apex court include- Justice Abhay Srinivas Oka, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice BV Nagarathna, Justice CT Ravikumar, Justice MM Sundaresh, Justice Bela M Trivedi and PS Narasimha.
Justice Nagarathna is in line to become the first woman CJI in September 2027. Justice Nagarathna is the daughter of former CJI ES Venkatramaiah. Of these nine new judges, three Justices Vikram Nath, Nagratna and Narasimha are in line to become the CJI.
