Himachal Pradesh have lost the most popular leader

With the death of veteran Congress leader and six time former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, Himachal Pradesh lost the most popular leader of the state politics.
Former Chief Minister Virbhadra passed away in the wee hours on Thursday morning in IGMC Shimla. That brought an end to a political era in Himachal Pradesh. He was under treatment for the past few months.
Although he had recovered from COVID -19 virus attacks twice but could not survive a heart attack on July 5 . He left for his last journey leaving a large number of his supporters and masses in tears today.
Virbhadra Singh had unparallel long innings spanning more than five decades both in centre and state and was as one of the tallest leaders of Congress politics in Himachal Pradesh.
He wanted to be Professor of History after post graduating from St. Stephen College Delhi but then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru asked him to contest parliament election from Mahasu parliament seat in 1962.
He contested five parliament elections and nine Himachal Assembly elections and lost only twice; once in 1977 parliament election and in 1990 Assembly election from Jubal Kotkhai against former Chief Minister Ram Lal Thakur although he won from Rohru as he was contesting from two seats simultaneously.
He won series of Assembly elections from four different constituencies including Jubbal Kotkhai, Rohru, Shimla Rural and Arki in , 1983 , 1985, 1990, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2007, 2012 and 2017. He was elected as member parliament from Mahasu and Mandi constituencies four times in 1962, 1967, 1977, 1980 and 2009 and remained minister in the union government thrice.
He became Chief Minister of the state in 1983 by replacing Ram Lal Thakur by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Since then Virbhadra remained in the state legislative either as MLA or Chief Minister or leader of opposition. His contribution for the development of the state would be remembered for ages.
